The subclass Ammonoidea, a group that is often referred to as ammonites, first appeared about 450 million years ago. Ammonites were shelled cephalopods that died out about 66 million years ago.

The name ammonite comes from the God Ammon, who was worshipped all over Egypt and parts of Greece. He had spiral horns and was originally an Etheopian or Lybian deity.

Fossilised ammonites were thought to be petrified coiled snakes in medieval Europe and were called "snakestones" or, more commonly in medieval England, "serpentstones". They were thought to be evidence for the actions of saints and were believed to have healing or oracular powers.

Ammonites, with their spiral shape, are unsuprisingly symbols of change and positive motion. The spiral draws in negative energy, filtering it through the chambers and releasing fresh, positive energy. Some have used the ammonites connection to energy for Kundalini--the concept in Dharma that refers to primal energy (called shakti)--which coils at the base of the spine and is a source of life force or energy. Ammonites are associated with ancient knowledge, which is in respect to their life in ages past.

Ammonites are primarily associated with the third eye chakra, with a secondary in the root chakra. Ammonite is not a birthstone, however it has come to relate to the zodiac signs of Aquarius and Cancer. Ammonite fossils are believed to help with ailments like blood pressure and degenerative disorders, such as those affecting the ears and lungs.

As a significant earth-healing fossil with qualities in grounding, ammonite brings balance and order to life. These two qualities enhance spiritual growth, refinement and expansion. It provides insight, and can assists you in seeing the 'whole picture'.
